2015 CANALICCHIO DI FRANCO PACENTI
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO
$19.99 BTL./$119.94 - SIX PACK

Located in the northern sector of Montalcino, Canalicchio is a sleeper producer who produces wines from an exquisite terroirs that provides immense elegance, polish, breed and depth. This wine takes on the traits of its maker…holding its cards close to his chest, very debonair and revealing its true personality on its own terms.

That said 2015 is quite special! One of my Brunello producers, and with good reason, Franco Pacenti is somewhat of a Leonardo Da Vinci of Montalcino - the man knows how to cram beautiful density in his wines as well as obtaining optimum finesse as well. 2015 is a super year, and for Montalcino, one to rival the likes of 2010. Canalicchio’s latest wine is impressive and the price is its usual stunning self, showing off beautiful floral and lots of blackcurrant tones, Tuscan spice, licorice and hints of mineral. In the mouth, it has substance along with ample seduction and persistence.

2013 IL POGGIONE
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO
$27.99 BTL./$335.88 CASE

About as iconic as they come for Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione has been a stalwart in this area making Brunello since the 1890s about 100 years before the craze of the region ever took hold. Ultra-traditional in thought, about 15 years ago, Il Poggione toyed with making their Rosso in a softer, suppler style. Fortunately they came to their senses and in recent vintages they have reverted back to their traditional ways of making this sturdy and structured, the style that made them most famous.

2013 is a remarkable vintage for the king of Tuscan regions and Il Poggione's Rosso di Montalcino is exuberant with red berry fruit, roasted sage, violet and rich earth notes. There is a beautiful note of purity once this wine hits the mouth, with a core of ripe cherry, Tuscan roasted herbs and fine tannins that are both ripe and yet add a beautiful frame for the rich and Montalcino decadence to sit upon. Ultimately, it is meant to go with food. Enjoy it with roasted meat dishes, pasta with sage, butter, and tomatoes with or without meat. A Rosso that really wants to be a Brunello and often outdoes many of its more famous Brunello brethren. Drink over the next decade.
