2018 CHATEAU DE LA TOUR-PENET
MACON-PERONNE
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

Situated 18 kilometers north of the city of Macon, this terrific discovery from the village of Peronne kills it with its excellent price. A seventeenth century Chateau and property that once belonged to the poet/politician Lamartine in the 19th century, its current gérants are the Ferret family who make only one wine from these energetic limestone soils.

Unoaked Chardonnay in its most natural and defined state, it possesses Intense yet tender aromas of lemon, freshly cut crisp yellow apple, white peach with a minerally undertow allowing the wine to let you know where it is from. The sun shines here so the fruit is present, but there is virtual diamond-like precision and finesse that shimmers in the mouth. Firm and vibrant on the finish with fleshy, crunchy texture and depth of flavor that hangs around nicely. Enjoy it with very simple fish dishes, salads or lighter cheeses.

2017 CHATEAU DE LA TERRIERE
BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR
$17.99 BTL./$215.88 CASE

Known for their delicious Beaujolais wines, Chateau de la Terriere also produces a small amount of Pinot Noir from an area known as the Pierres Dorees. This southern area near Lyon is famed for its golden stone houses as well as its granitic soils. For some reason Pinot Noir performs very well in this spot even if there isn’t much planted. This particular wine comes from a parcel that has vines that average 50 years in age that have not only granite but limestone and clay for depth and energy.

Do not compare this with Oregon. Do not compare this with the Cote D’Or near Beaune, this has a distinct Pinot personality all its own. Generous cherry scents present along with a distinct black licorice, tealeaf, graham and peppercorn. Straight-on aromas and flavors make this a perfect ‘vin de soif’ that has depth and prominent spice. Drink over the next 3-4 years with roasted duck, turkey, terrines, pâtés, or subtle yet creamy cheeses.
