Have you ever gone shopping for groceries while not knowing what you want to eat. Many times you come home with a box of Twinkies. This concept is very similar to shopping for inexpensive merlot. Often times you get one that is 12- bucks only to pour a glass and have it open into a puree of okra-stuffed green peppers with a healthy dose of misplaced oak. This wine breaks the mold.
Mattes-Sabran is serious about their terroir. Many of the estate’s vineyards are located on steep hillsides, terraced into the chalky, poor soils. This tough terrain is peppered with galets roulés, the large, oval granite stones typical in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah & 20% Mourvedre, this Southern French red is chock full of plum, garrigue, hot-rock and plenty of white pepper. Flavorful, generous and packed with spice from the fruit-forward start to the wild and unbridled finish. Gorgeous juice that screams for a grilled lamb, burgers, spaghetti & meatballs, pate, salami, sausage and more.

We often refer to Minervois as an outlaw growing region, particularly since it is so vast, has terroirs that change like an obstacle course, and utilizes an abundance of varietals. Chateau Massiac is quite a staple of the region and one whose wines have both detail and cojones. Located in the North-center area in the heart of the appellation, this cuvee from Minervois is a blend of Syrah and Carignan.
The credo at Massiac is expressed so well on this wine - elegance, yet concentration; expressive, but subtle; hedonistic, but cerebral. The 2018 captivates its audience with black raspberry aromas, which lead to a broad, spice, animalistic, ripe red/black raspberry-packed personality. Warmly textured, lots of palate coverage, yet with fine acids and tannins. Complex, sultry, and crammed with southern French soul, possessing a meaty finish that screams of pepper and herbes de provence. A total lamb wine, drink this killer through 2025.

Unlike many who mass-produce this varietal in this area, Languedoc maestro Cyriaque Rozier takes Cabernet Sauvignon very seriously. How the hell he is able to maintain a price point such as this and sustainably farming the land is beyond us!
From vines planted in 1970, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from a site within Pic-S-Loup is ‘Sudnapafrance’ indeed. Exuding warm climate Cabernet traits as well as exemplary Mediterranean aspects, old vine cabernet cassis and blackberry notes shine along with garrigue characteristics of mint, thyme and cracked pepper. Chewy, succulent, mouth filling and deceptively structured, this wine is a terrific everyday Cab that can consumed on its own or paired with grilled lamb or pork chops.
