2012 LA PALAZZETTA SANT' ANTIMO ROSSO

Created for SuperTuscans in Montalcino. An excuse to add Cabernet and Merlot to the wines. Flavio Fanti is a Montalcino man who utilizes only native Tuscan varietals in all his wines. ($12)

Where It's From:   Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy.
Grape(s):   50% Sangiovese Grosso & 50% Colorino
Aromas and Flavors:   Hearty black fruit from Colorino, pulsaating red notes from Sangio. Bursting and sneaky deep.
Food Choices:   Penne with Bolognese sauce.
Music Choices:   'Down By The Border' by Tony Joe White. A perfect song from a Nashville outlier for a Montalcino outlier.

2010 MERCEDES EGUREN CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Pure Spanish Cab?? What the hell's up with that??!?! A whole lot of goodness, that's what, and less than 9 bucks to boot!. ($8.50)

Where It's From:   La Mancha, Spain.
Grape(s):   100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Aromas and Flavors:   Blackberry, mint, espresso scents. Plush and full, lots of Spanish sass.
Food Choices:   Pork chops or chorizo sausages.
Music Choices:   I Want You Back from The Jackson 5 since Cabernet is unadulterated pop.

2012 VISTA HILLS PINOT NOIR "FOURMEN"

Forward, driving and exactly what should be found in a 15 buck Oregon Pinot Noir. No pretense or pretending it's something it isn't ($15)

Where It's From:   Right here. Willamette Valley, Oregon.
Grape(s):   100% Pinot Noir.
Aromas and Flavors:   Cherry pit, fine herbs and pepper. Lacy, medium weight but palate coating nonetheless.
Food Choices:   Charcuterie plate or a mushroom tart. Perhaps fish.
Music Choices:   Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill'. A reference to the Dundee Hills but also one to the uphill battle it is to find a good Pinot at this price.

2013 CAZIN CHEVERNY BLANC

A real jumper of a bone-dry white wine from the Loire valley. Really wants to make you put your dancing shoes on! ($14.50)

Where It's From:   France, Cheverny, Loire Valley.
Grape(s):   80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay.
Aromas and Flavors:   Lemongrass, mineral, smoke, more mineral and a squeeze of tangerine.
Food Choices:   Salmon and goat cheese. Not necessarily together.
Music Choices:   Sylvan Esso's 'Hey Mami'. Both the wine and the track are mouth-watering delicious. Just go with it.

2011 LE ROC FRONTON "LA FOLLE NOIRE D'AMBAT"

Folle Noire means crazy black, D'Ambat is the vineyard site. The wine is about as off the grid as it gets but is most importantly satisfyingly hearty and delicious. ($14)

Where It's From:   Fronton, France and literally in the ever-growing outskirts of Toulouse.
Grape(s):   Tout Negrette.
Aromas and Flavors:   Plum, cherry-pit, savory earth and herbs, subtle sanguine gaminess.
Food Choices:   A unique taste of France. Try it with duck leg, lamb leg or chicken leg.
Music Choices:   'Blood Mountain' from Mastodon. Rich loud sound for a wine that requires it.

2012 BISCI ROSSO FOLGLIANO

Le Marches Madness even in December. Broad-scaled and delightful red from a producer more known for their white wines. ($15)

Where It's From:   Le Marches Italy, along the Adriatic Coast
Grape(s):   Sangiovese & Merlot and throw out thoughts of Tuscany and Blabbering Bordeaux.
Aromas and Flavors:   Blueberry, sage, ocean breeze and underlying anise. Suave, smooth and harmonious.
Food Choices:   Roasted pork loin with paprika. Fried chicken. Roasted beets and squashes
Music Choices:   'Mark Kozelek Sings Christmas Carols' by Mark Kozelek. Unexpectedly accessible, haunting and beautiful Christmas renditions from a man who had a high body count on his band Sun Kil Moon's latest, brilliant album called Benji.
