The heatwave seems to be over and folks seem to be less cranky and hopefully in a drinking mood. This month's playlist reflects summer drinking and listening. Enjoy!!

(2013) ELVIO TINTERO ROSSO TINTERO

Parentheses on the vintage because grapes come throughout the growing region, hence, no DOC, no vintage. No problem, this succulent Italian red is all about big bang for 10 bucks! ($10.00)

Where It's From:   Piedmont, Italy.
Grape(s):   Equal parts Nebbiolo and Barbera with drops of Cabernet Franc and Dolcetto.
Aromas and Flavors:   Vivacious, clean, bursting. Red berry succulence with mineral, dark chocolate and licorice. Mouth filling, brilliant and imminently quaffable.
Food Choices:   Antipasti consisting of salami, carpaccio, some buffalo mozzarella. Also delicious with a carne asada taco.
Music Choices:   Stone Cold Crazy' by Queen.



2014 FOLK MACHINE 'PARTS & LABOR' RED

An earthquake of significance is occuring in California's wine scene. Producers like this are focusing on balance, depth and character over thickness and booziness with their diverse wines of integrity. ($15.00)

Where It's From:   California's Potter Valley, Arroyo Seco, Redwood Valley & Mendocino regions.
Grape(s):   7% Syrah, 31% Carignan, 25% Grenache, 7% Barbera.
Aromas and Flavors:   Blackberry, wild strawberry, aromatic herbs and pepper. Pleasantly impacting without being burdensome. Lots of thrust at 13.1% alcohol.
Food Choices:   Grilled cheese sandwiches dunked in tomato soup, BBQ ribs or pulled pork.
Music Choices:   'Let It Happen' from Tame Impala.



2013 MAISON ANGELOT BUGEY GAMAY

Crunchy, fleshy red that demonstrates that there are good wines produced in some very unlikely regions of the world. ($12.00)

Where It's From:   The Savoie appellation of Bugey in the French Alps.
Grape(s):   100% Gamay.
Aromas and Flavors:   Exuberant, red-tinged and wide open with strawberry, graham and mountain spices.
Food Choices:   Roasted chicken or bratwurst.
Music Choices:   The Beastie Boys 'Shake Your Rump'.



2014 KIR-YIANNI AKAKIES ROSE

The Greeks don't want no freaks...unless you want to get down with this ever-delightful dry pink wine that always pleases. ($14.00)

Where It's From:   Amyndeon region in northwestern Greece.
Grape(s):   100% Xinomavro.
Aromas and Flavors:   Remove your thoughts of pink retsina, this is substantial, dry, luminous rose with scents and flavors of pomegranate, mint and lime.
Food Choices:   Love, love, love this with calamari and it will also match well with just about any shrimp preparation.
Music Choices:   Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper' by Panda Bear



2012 LUIS DUARTE AGRICULTURA TINTO

Delightfully savory and generous red made by renowned Portuguese wine man Luis Duarte that is forward and doesn't require one to grapple with it to like it. ($11.00)

Where It's From:   Alentejano, Portugal.
Grape(s):   30% Aragonez (a.k.a Tempranillo), 30% Touriga Nacional, 40% Trincadeira.
Aromas and Flavors:   Driving fragrances of blueberry, savory herbs and balsam. Plush and plate-coating with no shortage of fruit and harmonious detail.
Food Choices:   Unpretentious red wine that require unpretentious food like a burger that isn't muddled up with guacamole or some other hipster rubbish...although bacon is OK
Music Choices:   AC/DC'S 'Hell's Bells'.



2013 GREGORY PEREZ BIERZO 'BREZO'

Bordeaux born and bred, Gregory Perez has established himself as one of Bierzo's rising stars and is producing remarkable wines reflecting the soul of this high-elevation region. ($14.00)

Where It's From:   Bierzo, NW Spain.
Grape(s):   100% Mencia.
Aromas and Flavors:   Marionberry, sanguine, smoke and roasted herbs followed by lifting and inviting red, earthy flavors.
Food Choices:   Serrano ham, pork chops or a fish done with a tomato preparation.
Music Choices:   'Soul Power' from James Brown.
