2019 MARTA MATE RIBERA DEL DUERO
'EL HOLGAZAN'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

This and the following entry are delightful, full flavored red wines that are portraits of just how much goodness one can score for under 25-dollars. Located in the northernmost point of Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, the vines for this single vineyard, 100% Tempranillo are 25 years old and are planted at 2800 feet.

A young team all around, Marta Castrillo and Cesar Mate founded this estate in 2013 and given their location, choose to make wines built around nuance, detail and a lovely core of fruit versus many in this area that are seriously extracted, heavy and boozy. The El Holgazan rocked my world when tasting it yesterday. Forward, upbeat flavors of mouthcoating blueberry, milk chocolate, red plum, minerally earth, cinnamon and perfume come together on a perfectly built elegant and sophisticated frame. Lingering red and dark perfumed berries and spice permeate the palate and expand into something quite wonderful. A vibrant and pretty decadent drink right now and over the next 6-8 years. Enjoy it with classy yet hearty fare like slow cooked leg of lamb.

2018 MARTA MATE RIBERA DEL DUERO
'VINAS DEL LAGO'
$24.99 BTL./$299.88 CASE

A blend of clay, limestone and sandy soils perched at 3000 feet; this beauty is poise and pleasure personified. A most suggestive trio of grapes (88% Tempranillo, 7% Garnacha, 5% Albillo) comprises this captivating red wine, which is soon to become one of the darlings of the region. This all means, get in early so you can say, I discovered this wine before it was well known and more expensive!

Flamenco in a glass and revealing sexy, polished and refined tones of strawberry, smoke, coriander and intermittent earth tones. In the mouth, it is layered and lacy with excellent depth and personality. Spreads out nicely in the mouth as it moves from front to back. As it opens, the persistent red and black berry qualities shine through along with various Asian and African spices all carry through to the suave, lengthy finish that possesses excellent length. Drink over the next decade with grilled pork chops or a nice rib-eye steak.

2020 LES PETITES SARDINES
MUSCADET SUR LIE
$11.99 BTL./$143.88 CASE

The sun is out, the Beatles are playing in the background and what can be more fun and tasty than a whimsical 12-dollar Muscadet!

Made by the co-op of Pallet in the Sevre et Maine region, this blazing, crisp white wine spends 2 months on the lees and from start to finish, tickles you in places that you didn’t know could be ticklish. 100% Melon (remember Muscadet is the region and has nothing to do with the Muscat grape). Pure aromas of oyster shell, lime zest and granite. Brilliant clarity and focus, it is cut like a diamond, very refined and multi-dimensional with stellar depth of flavor. Bright and linear acidity balances everything out. Grab some fresh oysters or mussels…what the hell are you waiting for??!!
