2016 ROCCA DI FRASSINELLO MAREMMA
TOSCANA 'POGGIO ALLA GUARDIA'
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

When Lafite-Rothschild ventures out of Bordeaux to partner up on projects from other growing areas they always choose top name producers of their respective regions. Rocca di Frassinello is the joint venture between Eric de Rothschild and Castellare di Castellina owner Paolo Panerai, a highly regarded Chianti and Super Tuscan producer who has over 10 Tre Bicchieri Awards from Gambero Rosso.

Situated between Bolgheri and Scansano and made with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese, this wine has Bordeaux polish without ever losing its Italian and Tuscan soul. Super-streamlined aromas of plum, generous Italian herbs, iron, blueberry, cassis along with spicy, smoky, vanilla tones from a fine use of oak - think of this as Draymond Green wearing an Armani suit; suave, but with wild hair and a total assassin! Smooth, concentrated, layered but in typical Lafite fashion, not a hair out of place, smooth and very sophisticated. The wine's finish is very drawn-out and lasting with sexy black licorice and tealeaf notes. Utterly brilliant juice from two legends that can be consumed now through 2025.

2018 VOLPAIA 'PRELIUS' VERMENTINO
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

Vermentino is a white grape that is seen throughout Italy’s Mediterranean areas as well as Sardinia, Piedmont (called Favorita) as well as France (known as Rolle). This grape can vary in styles and quality, however, when famed Chianti genius Castello di Volpaia jumped into the game purchasing a property in Tuscany’s Maremma region, we had to take notice.

The quality that is Volpaia certainly rears its lovely head as soon as the wine is poured. Located a mere three miles from the sea, the marine influence is also present. Lovely aromatics of seashore and mineral with notes of lemon and white flowers, and a hint of spice join as the wine unfolds. Incredibly refreshing and dry with mouth-quenching intensity and an inviting texture filled with ripe flavors of Meyer lemon, pear and spice. Enjoy this delicious white as an aperitivo or with a plate of steamed mussels or lighter fish dishes.

2009 FALCHINI CAMPORA ROSSO
$37.50 BTL./$225.00 SIX-PACK

The story here is quite crazy. Back in the 70s before many of famous names in Tuscany became superstars there were, and still are, old friendships that turned into collaborations. Riccardo Falchini became quite a Vernaccia di San Gimignano producer and wanted to do reds. His friend Giacomo Tachis, yes, the same dude behind names like Antinori and Sassicaia advised him quite well and his love of Bordeaux came about on his land in this area. Now Riccardo’s son Michael is in charge and there are times that he opens up the library and offers older versions.

2009 is a very successful but warm Tuscan vintage. 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, this wine is evidence of what the conditions brought as well as the superb terroir of Falchini’s Camporaiolo vineyard. Packed with full fruit and Italian nuances, blackcurrant, hints of allspice, balsamico, dried violet, and bold plum are at the forefront. Dense and expansive with plenty of dimension, this wine builds towards a deep finish that is lifting, redolent of Cabernet and best yet, very Italian. Perfect with a grilled T-bone steak or hearty meat-laden pappardelle pasta dish. Drink over the next 4-6+ years.
