3.) 2015 CHATEAU MASCARONNE
COTES-DE-PROVENCE ROSE
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

In 1999, this classic Provencal Chateau and its vineyards were revitalized and purchased by Tom Beve, an American who formerly owned Chateau Miraval, which so many of you enjoyed in the past. Located in a different spot than Miraval and possessing different terroir, this Rose is prototype of what good, well crafted, Southern French Rose should be.

Made from 45% Cinsault, 25% Grenache, 15% Syrah & 15% Mourvedre this pearl of a dry pink wine is lightly macerated on its skins for a few hours then gently pressed to put forth something quite complex and complete. A mouthful of yum, but just as important, one whiff will transport you to the land of lavender! Smoke, subtle spice, strawberry-watermelon notes jump from the glass and lead into a sophisticated and lip-smacking texture that shows itself to be both a regal and serious Rose that is not only just for slamming back, it is great to take to the table. Mascaronne Rose is perfect fodder with grilled tombo tuna, grilled salmon, vegetable-driven salads and goat cheese slathered in olive oil and Provencal herbs.

2013 ANTIDOTO RIBERA DEL DUERO
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

Something of a rarity in a very high rent neighborhood is this bomb of a Tempranillo from quite an influential figure. Frenchman Bertrand Sourdais singlehandedly put the far eastern, high elevation portion of Ribera del Duero on the map by making the wines at Atauta. When the global economic downturn occurred in 2009, Bertrand went back to France but the sirens of this area always had been beckoning and thus became the genesis of Antidoto.

Continuing his exploration of the area, Bertrand is focusing on a single varietal (Tempranillo) and site, specifically utilizing pre-phyloxerra vines as this area with its proliferation of sandy soils has an abundance of ancient vines. The other beauty of this wine is that there is absolutely no aging in new barrels; it is all about neutrality and sense of place. Cool climate prevails here and the virtual fragrance and complexity of Rioja seemingly inspires this wine but is backed up beautifully with the fullness, power and depth of Ribera Del Duero. The natural stanchness of the fruit is massaged into a structure that seduces the palate, caressing the tongue with an almost velvet-like texture. The presence of coolness is important for the wines reflection of their NE Ribera sector terroir. Fresh-cut flowers, mineral, creamy marionberry permeate from the glass following to a savory texture and is chock full of earth and spice. Refined and scrumptious now, it will easily develop for 4-5 years as well.

2013 CALERA PINOT NOIR
CENTRAL COAST
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

Calera owner/winemaker Josh Jensen's "family tree of winemakers" is long and distinguished and includes the likes of Cristom's Steve Doerner who earned his bones here for over a decade before coming to Oregon and rocking our state. Many other cite this cat as one of their influences and inspirations when it comes to winemaking, this most iconic producer, due to their unique Central Coast, limestone-based soils, has never been to chase recognition from the wine press, they have flocked to him. Instead, for 35+ years, these wines are beloved by connoisseurs who prefer the subtle and cerebral in their wines all without losing any intensity.

Made from fruit from a number of terrific Central Coast vineyard sites, Calera’s 2013 expresses all the beauty of its region. It has rich aromas of ripe raspberries and cassis along with a plush mouth-feel with loads of red fruits that include strawberry, raspberry and cherries. Lively, peppery and persistent on the finish, there is both youthful exuberance and complexity that allow for imminent pleasure yet it will certainly develop over the next decade.

2012 CAYROU CAHORS
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

90% Malbec, 10% Merlot and released later versus straight away because often times the wines when young that come from such stalwart traditionalists in this region can be like going to see the Raiders play in Oakland on ‘Nail Gun Day'. The extra aging in both bottle and tank allows for more harmony and smoothness to arrive and it certainly does here.

More dry than versions from Washington or Argentina. Deep opaque formidable juice with wild scents of red and blue berries, plum, sandalwood, exotic spice and dried mushrooms pour from the glass and into the mouth where it is full and generous with a thoroughly likeable lively twist from not seeing any oak barrels. Even though there is a toe in this century, this is Cahors and the flavors of this rich land permeate the pure aromas and flavors found this ancient region. The finish is long, lasting and palate staining. This is a whole lotta wine for under 20 bucks! Drink this wine now and over the next 4-5 years with hearty braised and grilled fare.

2013 WOODWARD CANYON CHARBONNEAU WALLA WALLA RED
$86.99 BTL./$1,043.88 CASE

Not produced every vintage, the 2013 version is the first Chabonneau since 2009! 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot from the Charbonneau Vineyard in northern Walla Walla County overlooking the Snake River with the remaining 7% Petite Verdot coming off of Woodward Canyon’s Estate site, this is one of the mightiest red blends from this area that I have tasted so far this year.

Notes from Rick Small, Woodward Canyon proprietor: ‘The nose has typical Charbonneau aromas of sweet aromatic pipe tobacco, leather and cigar box integrate with sweet, rich black cherry fruit. Elegant oak from new French barrels plays in with stronger notes of petit verdot black fruit spice and mocha. Ripe black cherry fruit is in perfect proportion with new French oak, acidity, alcohol and tannin. The wine has great texture with firm mature tannins; the finish is generous and long. The nose is absolutely Charbonneau! The flavor profile expresses the character of the vineyards beautifully with subtle herb and tobacco nuances coupled with gorgeous complex fruit, which in my opinion makes this wine so distinctive. I find classic Left Bank character and elegance that truly entices. I am impressed that Charbonneau can have such an expression of place year after year after year.’ No problem to age this wine for up to two decades from vintage date.
