Pouilly-Fume is lesser known than its more famous neighbor of Sancerre. Although similarities usually outweigh the differences, Sancerre tends to have more ripe fruit and vigorous acidity while Pouilly-Fumé often has more body weight and a smoky complexity. Both are considered as some of the world's greatest food wines.
From a special selection of 80-year-old vines from pure silex (flint) soil, this is one of the purest expressions in the entire appellation. Tense, refined, dry and penetrating with multi-faceted citrus fruit like limes, cumquats and orange. The bottom line really is the soil and how it defines the fruit and minerally, flinty character in the wine. If you want something that will pair with salmon or other sturdy fish dishes, then this is the wine for you.

One of the fabled producers of Abruzzo, Luigi Cataldi Madonna marries tradition with innovation and produces wines that are seriously upscale for the region yet won't cause one to break the bank in order to enjoy a bottle. Over the last decade, give or take, we have featured the Montepulciano D’Abruzzo as well as the white wine from the Pecorino grape but this is one of the few times that we have offered the invigorating rose, and on special.
A pink rocket of love that is destined to send you into orbit, this rose from 100% of the Montepulciano grape is all about vivid pleasure. Made from vines planted in 1970 and specifically meant for this wine, alluring licorice whip and strawberry surround subtle mineral and freshly cut herbs; the cool, ethereal texture that takes on all of the nuances that the nose gives. The finish bursts and grabs the tongue before heading down. Beautifully dry, savory and mouth filling, it is really at its best with a tomato-based seafood stew or Arancini. A perfect wintertime pink wine.

It is always great to offer this fantastic Oregon Pinot Noir that is made by Louis Jadot from Burgundy. Even more thrilling is that longtime Jadot frontman/winemaker, Jacques Lardiere is in Oregon and overseeing the viticultural program. The total loop-de-loop thrill ridge is when it is on a fifteen-dollar reduced special!Sourced from two estate vineyards, Resonance (Yamhill-Carlton) and Decouverte (Dundee Hills and formerly known as Gehrts Vineyard), then augmented with a few other top Oregon sites, this wine is such an expression of Oregon terroir with Jadot and Lardiere’s deft touch.
Beautifully crafted, lofty scents of raspberry fruit combine with shaved dark chocolate, prominent mineral, ground pepper and an underlay of rose and thyme. On the palate, it is finely formed with a lovely core of fruit, yet possessing excellent movement and vibrancy, especially on the ample finish. For this vintage, this wine reveals nice accessible characteristics, but there is ample structure here to allow the wine to age nicely for another decade and beyond.

Now joined by daughter Blandine since 2012, Jean-Luc Mayard and Domaine Galet-des-Pape continue to make Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines that are great values, sneaking in just below the wine press’s radar. First up is the new release of the 2017 Vieilles Vignes cuvee. This cuvee is composed of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah from vines ranging from 80-110 years old and as experience e has proven, is one of the Chateauneuf wines that can age for a long time.
As we sat and tasted this wine, our notes went on and on, about how superb it was! Exotic red berry fruit on the nose along with lots of roasted and gamey tones, black pepper, coffee, and mineral penetrate deeply on the vibrant palate. Very primary roasted earth, black olive, herbes de Provence notes, along with a solid core of raspberry and kirsch fruit. This is typically a bit of a diva right now, but has an incredible future ahead of it. The saturated core of fruit and spice completely sops up any baby fat, and the length is too long to mention. It is reminiscent of, yet does not take a back seat to the likes of Pegau, Beaucastel or Vieux Donjon. Drink 2023 – 2040, especially with a great vintage like 2017.
