2018 CHATEAU PEYROU
CASTILLON COTES-DE-BORDEAUX
$26.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

A real over-achiever from a Saint-EMilion specialist, this opaque, full-scale Bordeaux made with 100% Merlot from 80-year-old vines immediately engages the olfactory senses with freshly ground espresso, prominent raspberry, underlying cedar box, anise and just a kiss of aromatic herbs. In the mouth, it is dry, palate-coating and possessing plenty of material and backbone. Long and drawn out, this wine follows over to the table quite nicely. Enjoy this one through the end of the decade with duck, lamb chops or perhaps a risotto jacked with ceps.

2018 is a fantastic vintage and very different from the firmly tannic and great 2016, there is more cushiony dark fruit that submerges the tannins to allow for earlier accessibility but also no problem to age 10-12 more years and gain further complexity. A steal of a Bordeaux for under 30-bucks.

2019 CASTELLO DI PANERETTA
CHIANTI CLASSICO
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

Paneretta is situated in the Chianti Classico area on the western slopes of the dominating hills of the Elsa valley, looking towards San Gimignano. In this area and on the same street there are three producers and all of them are 5-star, Isole e Olena, Monsanto and Paneretta. This estate seemingly makes wines that deliver something in everyone’s chosen price range. This week we are featuring their house specialty, the base Chianti Classico that delivers so much good value for 22 bucks.

No compromises to international varietals or techniques, it is a real Chianti with real Chianti highlights. Nice earthiness on the nose with cherry and plum notes lending a new spin to this traditional classic conjuring up cravings for focaccia and antipasto. Built on a backbone of fine tannins, it is a wine ready for the dinner table, but also worthy of a few more years of aging in the cellar. With subtle fruit, harmonious balance and a dry finish, it is a fine example of Italian winemaking tradition. Drink over the next 6-8 years.

2020 CHATEAU DES JACQUES
BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY
'CLOS DE LOYSE'
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

Owned by famed Beaune producer Louis Jadot, Chateau des Jacques is a renowned Cru Beaujolais producer and one that is beloved by the region as they are deeply involved in the promotion and cause of Beaujolais. One of the rarities in the range is their Bourgogne Chardonnay, which is sheer delight.

Made from a walled vineyard within the Cru of Chenas, this Chardonnay is grown in granite that is 2 meters below a clay topsoil. Aged 50% in stainless steel and 50% in barrels, Anjou pear, lemon and cereal tones shine with underlying pure minerality on the nose. There is impressive charisma here. In the mouth, it seems to pirouette like a ballerina before it gains depth and zest with prominent powdery mandarin, stone and faint spice aspects arriving on the finish. Drink over the next 5-8 years with the usual suspects that go well with white burgundy, scallops, sole or chicken with mushrooms.

2018 BURKLIN-WOLF ESTATE ROUGE
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

The hook for this wine is its name and locale. From Germany’s Pfalz region, which is somewhat of an extension of Alsace, the name Rouge sounds a whole lot nicer than Rot. Either way this cool climate red wine is dry, vibrant, medium bodied and perfect as we move into the fall season.

Made from a blend of Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Acolon grapes, lively cherry pit, clove and vanilla scents follow through to a succulent, juicy texture that has a good core of fruit, spice and lively aspects. All of the components come together and make for a nice glass of red on its own but also pairs well with sausages, chicken tikka masala, pork tenderloin with cumin/coriander spices and best of all, next month’s Thanksgiving turkey.

2017 DAVIDE CARLONE BOCA
$34.99 BTL./$419.88 CASE

The Northern reaches of Piedmont are quite in vogue, especially with a resurgence of regions like Gattinara and Ghemme but also a rediscovery of sorts of formerly lesser-known DOCs like Fara, Lessona and for this particular wine, Boca. Closer to Swiss border than Alba, the wines here are markedly different from those of Barolo and Barbaresco and have wonderful distinction to them.

Davide Carlone is a fabulous producer whose wines should be more known than they are. If this were in Barolo, it would retail for 50 versus 35-dollars. 75% Nebbiolo & 25% Vespolina, lovely fragrance, showing fennel, turned-earth with more and more camphor arriving as it opens. Steely-eyed, assertive tones lurk beneath. Wiry, classy entry, drives with nice cushion and well-honed polish and poise as it moves through the middle and on the finish. Firms up and turns inward on the packed, material-laden finish. At age five this is just starting to emerge so if you want to try, do decant. It will develop very well for another seven-10 years.

2021 GIRLAN PINOT GRIGIO
$13.99 BTL./$323.88 CASE

The quality for this Pinot Grigio says that this wine should run closer to $20 however, at 14 this is a smashing steal. This Pinot Grigio is definitely not boring. If you love this grape varietal, we cannot urge to more to jump all over this excellent value.

With its almost quartz-like aromas, this wine keeps inviting you back for more. Impeccable apple-spice fruit and a nice touch of mineral and mushroom permeate from the glass. The texture is creamy, but also seemingly very crystallized with serious cut and mouthwatering briskness. The finish is nakedly pure and drawn out. A magical match with smoked salmon. Drink it now and drink it often.

2020 LEZAUN NAVARRA TINTO
$9.99 BTL./$119.88 CASE

Hailing from Spain’s Navarra region, Lezaun’s tasty blend of Tempranillo, Grenache and a drop of Merlot is lively, plucky and a full frontal, honest to the grapes, unoaked version offers that excellent bang for the buck.

Red berries, baking herbs and brambly underbrush shine. In the mouth, it fills the mouth with no rough edges. Finishing with lively earth, blackberry and prominent white pepper tones, it is a lovely Wednesday burger wine or one to sip on for no good reason other than pleasure.

2019 RIDGE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
SANTA CRUZ ESTATE
$65.99 BTL./$791.88 CASE

95 Points – Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Ridge’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon stresses both the varietal and the vineyard as its source. The vineyard source in question is the famed Santa Cruz Monte Bello vineyard and grapes for this wine consistently produce wines that are more polished, forward and accessible, basically it lives up to its moniker of ‘Baby Bello’.

2019 is a classic Ridge Cab, it is chock full of cassis, blueberry and violet with spikes of cocoa that seemingly swirl in the glass. The texture is buxom and creamy with lots of sensuality to it. A mineral underlay and deceptive structure will allow this wine to age, however, when you uncork a bottle, it will prove to be very irresistible! Drink it over the next 15+ years. Cheers to Ridge for producing a wonderful Cabernet that is this damn good and while not inexpensive, does not force you to take out a second mortgage to drink a bottle. MAGNUMS AVAILABLE - $139.99
