When asked about Australian wine, the response from most people is Shiraz and Barossa. The remote South Australian region of Coonawara is the base of many great producers like Penfold's, Riddoch, Katnook, Parker, Penley and more. This is Australia’s spiritual home for Cabernet Sauvignon and many of the nation’s finest versions come from this land along with some absolute steals as well.
Female owned, Ang and Bec Tolley with winemaker Kate Goodman's wines from the famed Terra Rosa soils are some of the heroes from Down Under. The Phoenix is from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and rocks the house. Packed with tones of cassis, black raspberry and pepper surrounded by an engaging undertow of cocoa and allspice. In the mouth, it is deep, voluptuous and smooth offering that has lots of depth and structure as well. This wine is very fine right now, but will also age through 2027.

Renowned for centuries for the production of Port, over the last couple of decades or so, the Douro River Valley has been producing dry red wines and the quality continues to soar. Quinta do Infantado is a small but mighty Port lodge and they happen to produce a dynamite dry red wine.
Like many others these days, Infantado has seen their way to allowing some of their precious indigenous Port varietals (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz & Touriga Franca) to produce an extremely well-made red that has a complex array of exotic flavors and a captivating mouth-filling texture. Immediately, this red draws you into the glass with ocean-inspired aromas of mineral saline, warm and rich cinnamon laced cherry, dark chocolate and roasted earth. Flavorful and concentrated with blue, red and blackberry, sandalwood and licorice elements all in beautiful harmony. Pure minerally finish, with great freshness, plenty of ripe tannin grip and wonderful polish. Have this well-made juice with full flavored Mediterranean inspired dishes like marinated beef dishes with lots of garlic and spices, or even paella.

It’s been a minute since we have offered a wine from the Picpoul grape and I honestly can’t remember ever offering one from California. This one is from the OG Rhone Ranger himself, Randall Graham and Bonny Doon. Best of all it is 11% alcohol!
The great thing about Picpoul is that there are no luxury cuvees produced, no crazy use of French oak and it is always dry, blazing, and just downright slurpable. Gorgeous aromatics of melon, green apple and flowers lead into a bursting mouthful of lime-zest, saline and subtle herbs go nuclear. Anyone who loves dry, crisp white wines, should stock up on this delicious everyday white wine! Divine stuff to drink with shellfish or a plate of grilled green vegetables. Drink now and drink lots.

Jean-Marc Lafage is an influential producer in the Southern French region of Roussillon. A wide range of red, white and rose wines are produced but consistentyly my favrotie of the lineup is the old vines Carignan. From the Roussillon, this does not carry the Cotes-du-Roussillon designation because it is a mono-varietal wine.
100% Carignan grown at 900 feet in schist soils, there is impressive smoothness to this savory red wine. Considerable color and aromas of mure (wild plum – no real English translation), white pepper and aromatic herbs. Classy, ripe and showing stellar old vine intensity, spice, roasted earth and all-around Mediterranean warmth that make you think that you are on a holiday in the South of France. A perfect accompaniment with a braised shoulder of lamb with aromatic herbes de provence, Texas or Kansas City barbecue (especially smoky ribs), grilled steak or a Szechuan beef dish. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
