2013 PRIMITIVO QUILES 'CONO 4'

The two most popular sports in Spain are soccer and drinking and we make it easy to partake in the latter with this oh-so-delicious red. ($10)

Where It's From:   Alicante, Spain.
Grape(s):   100% Monastrell (Mourvedre for the flying frogs).
Aromas and Flavors:   Very individual, strong sense of blue fruit along with old-school scents of mocha, orange peel and wild spice. Lots of palate presence.
Food Choices:   Paella is the most obvious choice but I really dug it with a beef massaman curry stew.
Music Choices:   These New Puritans 'Field of Reeds'. Very courageous sounds to go with a very courageous wine.

2011 CHATEAU CLOTTE CASTILLON COTES-DE-BORDEAUX

A most excellent way to revolt against highly-taxed classified growth Bordeaux is to throw back many bottles from the area's lesser-known but fine quality areas. ($15)

Where It's From:   Castillon region of Bordeaux on the right bank of the Dordogne River.
Grape(s):   10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 60% Merlot.
Aromas and Flavors:   Suave, debonair, earth-laden scents. Dry flavors, beautiful depth with ample black cherry and spices.
Food Choices:   Roasted chicken stuffed with dried ceps, macaroni & cheese or an old school rare roast beef.
Music Choices:   Taxman'. from The Beatles. Need I say more on April 15??

2013 DOMAINE SKOURAS "ZOE" RED

Go on and throw away all of your perceptions of Greek wine. Not retsina at all, just something succulent and full of spirit. ($12)

Where It's From:   Peloponesse, Greece, specifically Nemea.
Grape(s):   90% Agiorgitiko, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Aromas and Flavors:   Luscious from the get-go. Warm and inviting with plum, anise and dried herbs.
Food Choices:   Lamb chops with mint as well as as something very Mediterranean like ratatouille .
Music Choices:   Anything by the Arctic Monkeys but 'A.M.' particualrly carries a hell of a lot of thickness and boisterousness.

2013 ANTONELLO GRECHETTO COLLI MARTANI BIANCO

Umbrians have such a polite demeanor although there is plenty of sass and substance to them all which is reflected in the region's wines. ($12)

Where It's From:   Umbria, Italy.
Grape(s):   100% Grechetto, a white grape of Greek origin that thrives in Central Italy.
Aromas and Flavors:   Mandarin, mineral and lemongrass. Leaping, bursting and the equivalent of an Italian slip~n~slide.
Food Choices:   Light seafood dishes, Ceviche or just for chugging by the pool.
Music Choices:   Katy Perry's 'Roar'. Don't think, just enjoy.

2010 THE LACKEY SHIRAZ

Don't be a lackey but do drink Lackey, an appealing number made by Kilikanoon, one of the Clare Valley's finest producers. ($13)

Where It's From:   South Australia.
Grape(s):   100% Shiraz.
Aromas and Flavors:   Purple aromas and texture. Violets, marionberry, leather and cocoa aspects. Fleshy, fresh and chewy.
Food Choices:   Barbecued beef brisket or a fat jalepeno burger with greasy fries.
Music Choices:   A bashing Aussie red calls for something equally potent. Listen to Aussie punk/psychobilly noisemakers The Living End's album 'Roll On' with or after several bottles.

2012 HAUTS DE SANZIERS SAUMUR ROUGE

And now we go from the loud and frontal to something more calm and contemplative to finish up April's Playlist. ($15)

Where It's From:   France's Loire Valley' region of Saumur.
Grape(s):   100% Cabernet Franc.
Aromas and Flavors:   Clean, low alcohol (12.5%) red chock full of red raspberry, touches of mint, lots of mineral and touches of pepper.
Food Choices:   Proscuitto or black forest ham, will also do very well with mild pork sausages or Saint-Nectaire cheese.
Music Choices:   John Coltrane's 'Blue Train'. Sometimes you just need Jazz 101 and then sit back and enjoy the harmony of the moment with food wine and music.
