2013 PUNSET DOLCETTO D'ALBA
Produced by an organically-farmed, very excellent Barbaresco producer, this is a wine that the Piemontese would drink for everyday fare. ($12)
Where It's From: Piedmont, Italy, specifically the Barbaresco village of Neive.
Grape(s): 100% Dolcetto.
Aromas and Flavors: Vivacious, clay-driven marionberry, and ample Neive power, yet promiscuous and playful with delicious mouthwatering flavors.
Food Choices: Carne cruda, steak tartare, chili rellenos, antipasti, pizza.
Music Choices: Joni Mitchell's 'Hejira'.
2014 MAVETTE COTES-DU-RHONE
'Le vrai Rhone' meaning that this paradox comes from a real grower using real fruit and puts forth a stellar value CDR. ($10)
Where It's From: Southern Rhone Valley, France.
Grape(s): 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan, 20% Syrah.
Aromas and Flavors: Lots of spice and everything nice including white pepper, thyme and plum. Sunny disposition throughout and very crowd pleasing.
Food Choices: Lamb, aged goat cheese, Korean BBQ.
Music Choices: 'Fables of the Reconstruction' by REM.
2012 BREA WINE CO. CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Civilized California Cab (12.9% alcohol) from two producers who are part of the new movement of California wines that are focused on terroir instead of reviews. ($16).
Where It's From: California, specifically Lodi & Lake County.
Grape(s): 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Aromas and Flavors: Red currant, cedarbox, red earth tones, kisses of spearmint. Poised texture, lovely clarity and varietally strong.
Food Choices: Grilled chicken or pork but also can work with hearty vegetarian fare, especially squashes.
Music Choices: 'I'm An Outlaw' from Kurt Vile's 'b'lieve i'm goin' down' release.
A very updated take on a wine from one of Spain's classic regions that is very well known for its delicious white wines. ($14)
Where It's From: Rueda, Spain.
Grape(s): 100% Verdejo.
Aromas and Flavors: Lemon, fennel, and mineral follow into a brisk, balanced and tasty texture.
Food Choices: Smoked salmon, a shrimp salad or just by itself.
Music Choices: 'Innervisions' by Stevie Wonder.
2013 VAONA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO
Prototype, all about charm and pleasure, Valpolicella wine made by a stalwart Amarone producer who does all around good work. ($11)
Where It's From: Il Veneto, Italy. Just outside the city of Verona.
Grape(s): 40% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 25% Rondinella, 5% Molinara.
Aromas and Flavors: Bursting at the seams. Violet, dried raspberry, almond and earth. Buoyant, tangy and sneaky long.
Food Choices: Manicotti stuffed with cheese, salami, even grilled tuna with a tomato-based salsa.
Music Choices: Burst Apart' and 'Familiars' from The Antlers.
The New World Order is undergoing quite a change. At least in what is brought to us from other countries outside of what normally comes in. Powerful red indeed. ($17)
Where It's From: Garzon, Uruguay.
Grape(s): 100% Tannat
Aromas and Flavors: Licorice, dark chocolate, underbrush and nutmeg. Powerful with bold presence of fruit, depth and backbone.
Food Choices: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
