2012 GIUSEPPE CORTESE
DOLCETTO D'ALBA 'TRIFOLERA'
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

One of Barbaresco's top-level producers who specializes in wines from the famed Rabaja vineyard, Cortese also makes fine wines from the adjacent Barbaresco village of Trifolera where the family has vines designated for their Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo wines.

The vines for this particular Dolcetto are 25-30 years old and it shows in its penetrating aromas and flavors. A classic red wine for the whole meal with a red-violet color, intense vinous perfume, and a slight spicy note. Texturally elegant and smooth, fresh and balanced, with the bursting aftertaste that's typical of Dolcetto. Often this is the wine served first or for every-evening consummtion in Piedmont, although the two today are quite a bit more serious players. This versatile red wine will go with just about anything - fish, chicken, pasta, hamburgers, burritos and more!

2015 ELIO GRASSO
NEBBIOLO LANGHE 'GAVARINI'
$21.99 BTL./$131.94 - SIX PACK

The 2015 Nebbiolo is one of the finest Nebbiolo values on the market right now. A renowned Barolo producer, Gianluca Grasso gives this wine all of the love and attention that he does to his single vineyard Barolo wines. Definitely not the power of a Barolo, but a sleek and full Nebbiolo expression nonetheless.

Aged entirely in stainless steel tanks, the 2015 Nebbiolo Langhe Gavarini is from the Barolo district of Monforte D’Alba and displays freshness and lots of clarity that are indicative to this part of the Barolo zone. Aromatic rose-petal, red cherry and mineral carry over into a texture that is classically put together with its firm and wry character that exudes plenty of dark tones to bring just a hint of softness. This is not a by-itself quaffer, have it with pasta, a simple lamb dish or while listening to Led Zeppelin’s ‘No Quarter’. 2015 shaping up to be an exciting, warm vintage and this is a great start. Enjoy through 2022.

NAMEOF2012 GIUSEPPE MASCARELLO
BARBERA D'ALBA 'SCUDETTO'WINE
$34.99 BTL./$419.88 CASE

Having been producing Barolo, Barbera and Dolcetto since 1881, the phenomenal traditionalist house of Giuseppe Mascarello kills it from their top-level Monprivato Barolo all the way to their quaffing Freisa. The current Mascarello in charge is the dynamic (and showman) Mauro Mascarello. Consistently we see greatness emerge from his Cantine and in the amazing 2006 vintage, he's got the volume of complexity turned up to the maximum.

From a single vineyard in quite a respectable neighborhood, Scudetto is located in Monforte D'Alba and right at the border of Castiglione Falletto, 2 of Barolo's Grand Cru villages. Also bearing the Superiore designation, this wine is aged in large oak casks for 18 months and then held in bottle for a year before release, all required to carry the Superiore tag. At age 4, this Barbera is starting to become operatic.

Aromas that speak more of Piemonte than grape varietal swirl from the glass, with violet, dried rose pedal, dark chocolate, mushroom cap, anise and smoked earth. Rich red fruits smoothly coat the mouth with cardamom and roasted espresso bean following on a vibrant and really persistent finish. The intense complexity that this wine is noted for is just beginning to peak out right now and will continue to develop and drink exquisitely for another 6-8 years.
