We’re throwing a shoe at 2016 and ringing in 2017 a day early with wines from Bordeaux and Oregon along with a bubbly. Bring your friends, bring your family, the juice will be flowing!
A smaller Chateau, Charmail's vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petite Verdot are contiguous around the Chateau. What makes these wines possess good distinction is the virtual mosaic of terroirs (gravel, clay, sand and limestone) that bring ultimate dimension and depth. In just about all vintages of Charmail, these are well structured Bordeaux.
One of the great sleeper vintages that many wine insiders have figured out is the sneaky-fine 2011. Still no shortage of classic Bordeaux grip, the cool qualities of 2011 show up quite well, Laden with inviting cassis and red berry, smoke, engaging cooking herbs, potpourri and dark chocolate tones. Rather succulently textured and arriving in waves, the wine fills the mouth and has ample, underlying structure that will allow it to develop nicely.

Unless you have been living under an Oregon rock you should by now know the prowess of this Eola-Amity producer. The husband and wife team of Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon are long time Oregon wine vets who started Walter Scott, their own wine adventure in 2008. Lately they have been receiving enormous accolades from not only wine critics but also the real litmus test, wine lovers.
Here is a 2015 that is very civil in many cases, can be a rather vociferous vintage. From a blend of five vineyard sites (Freedom Hill, Eola Springs, Vojtilla, Temperance Hill & Sojouner), this remarkable Pinot at 13.4% alcohol shows off both excellent fruit along with plenty of tension, grip and lively red tones. Walking the fine line between black and red, the 2015 brings forth sensuous aromatics with an impressive core of poised fruit, engaging smoke and spice all that follows through to a silky texture that expands nicely and maintains vibrancy throughout. Lengthy and very promising, this seriously delectable and seamless Pinot is an unmitigated heist and a real disservice to merely refer to it as 'entry level'. Very enjoyable now but this will also easily age and develop for 5+ years.

Col D'Orcia has been an important and well-run Montalcino property for almost 40 years and is consistently regarded as one of the region's prolific producers on all levels. The Montalcino vintage of 2013 was very classic indeed, and much on the lines of 2004 or 2006.
Full-on fragrant savory aromas leap from the glass. Packed with violet, red berry, sage and underbrush aromas, this wine emits its Sangiovese and Montalcino character. Typical of a Col D'Orcia wine, there is remarkable depth and personality in the mouth along with density, Italian tanginess and a nicely formed finish that is full of snap and extension.

There is Prosecco then there is Bisol’s Crede!
Crede is one of several single crus that Bisol produces to express the uniqueness of each of their microzones in the Valdobbiadene. The name Crede refers to the prominence of clay soils with sub-soils of marine sand, which allow the wine to possess a noble wealth of zest, aromatics, fruitiness, richness, and seriousness that is virtually never seen in Prosecco. Alluring scents of wildflowers, pears, apples and gently placed mineral shimmer from the glass; the texture is energetic, brisk, fruit driven and intense, yet the bubbles are some of the most finesseful and silky I've ever experienced in an Italian bubbly. Beautifully complex and way too classy to be tossed into a Bellini, treat this as you would with any other more expensive sparkling wine. Perfect for upcoming holiday fetes with out of town guests and family. Have it as an aperitif and especially with prawns or crab.
