Rioja featuring two from Bodegas Roda
Today February 12 from 1:30 - 6:30
Spain’s most venerable wine region will be on display this afternoon. Drop by to taste one of the area’s terrific values followed up by two wines from one of the region’s modern icons.
Bodegas Roda is a small estate that started in the late 80s and one where prestige and accolades arrived early on. Despite its youth as a winery, the vines used for these wines have an average age of over 50 years. Roda owns twelve separate parcels of land, which vary in exposure, elevation, and soil and meticulous farming, impeccable winemaking and major attention to detail is what makes this awesome Bodega not only thrive but have allowed it to become one of Spain’s finest and most sought after. After a bit of an absence in the market, we are thrilled to be able to offer and taste these wines once again.
Sela is Roda’s newest offering and is done from vines aging 15-30 years and is a blend of 96% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha. The epitome of smoothness and very expressive of its origins , this wine offers up extroverted fragrances of cassis, violet, allspice, black licorice and a hint of mineral. Captivating, majestic, mouth-filling, very smooth and gaining complexity as it unfolds in the glass. Stretches out on the palate and carries over to a generous, drawn-out, silky finish with slight peppery tones. Better than many other producers’ Reserva wines, drink this terrific Rioja over the next 7-9 years with roasted pork or lamb.

With the creation of the previously mentioned Sela in 2008, the quality of the already grand scale Roda Reserva (Formerly known as Roda II) and the ultra-amazing Roda I to fly even higher. 90% Tempranillo & 10% Graciano, the 2010 is absolutely smashing and from a profound vintage!
Alluring aromatic tones of smoked oak, adobe, smoked meat; prominent violet and blackberry mesh together to form a Rioja that shows quasi-Bordeaux inspiration. Owning a sophisticated, rich, velvety texture that crawls throughout and coats the palate, it also picks up grip and structure on the deep middle and persistent finish that is stacked with fine material. Extremely lovable now, this exciting upscale Rioja from one of the great modernistas will also develop and drink nicely through 2025.

A Rioja producer whose wines are relatively new to us but have excellent pedigree indeed. It also doesn’t hurt that the wines have a following in Spain and have been rightfully praised for the price/quality rapport.
‘The 2012 Crianza is pure Tempranillo fermented in concrete vats and aged in French and American oak barrels for 15 months. It has a nose of smoky bacon and terse, ripe black fruit with spices and floral notes. The palate is fresh, supple and tasty with good tension, good acidity and balance. A great example of modern traditional (or traditional modern) Rioja. Very good value. – 90 POINTS, THE WINE ADVOCATE’
