2015 PETROIO CHIANTI CLASSICO
$16.99 BTL./$101.94 - SIX PK

Today promises to be one hell of a showcase for Diana’s wines because the Chainti Classico region is in the midst of some superb vintages. Located north of Siena in the Berardenga zone, Diana Lenzi is top notch and given that these are directly imported, are exquisite values.

A perennial favorite, we are pleased showcase the ‘open for business’ 2015. This fabulous Tuscan vintage is inviting and up front with fruit as well as sneaky backbone. A brilliant ruby red color with an ample nose of violets, iris and sage followed by deep layers of red and black cherry fruit on the palate. Dry and flavorful with hints of spice and a touch of tobacco, this is a wine with impressive concentration, spine and yet maintaining a velvety feel and lingering finish.

2016 PETROIO CHIANTI CLASSICO
$16.99 BTL./$101.94 - SIX PK

It is a joy to have both of these vintages on display today because it is an exercise in what Mother Nature provides when she is in a fantastic mood. 2015 is marvelous and open-armed while 2016 is one of those seamless, perfect storm type of vintages that one does not encounter very often. This is a legendary vintage in the making and is very classic.

Marvelous for the region and for Diana's wines, vintage 2016 proves elusive, complex and agile with wonderful Morello cherry scents along with mineral, violet and kisses of truffle and wild spice. Harmonious, ample concentration without ever going outside of its borders to become burdensome or silly. Virtually no hairs out of place, this debonair Chianti will develop nicely. Savvy Chianti lovers will order some of both vintages!!

2014 PETROIO CHIANTI CLASSICO
RISERVA
$31.99 BTL./$191.94 - SIX PK

One of the things we admire most about Petroio's wines is that Riserva actually means something and is not merely a tag thrown on to the label and done with the minimum requirements. Lots of love and aging goes into this wine, almost three years in tonneaux and botti.

Very limited in production, the 2014 Riserva is a truly fine and elegant bottle of wine that has substantial character and potential. All about purity, savory cherry pit, sage, Tuscan spice and floral tones waft from the glass. Layered and very red-toned all in a finesseful package. Ethereal, lifting and very food-friendly and loads of persistence instantly transport you to that most memorable Tuscan vacation you took and the trattoria where you had the food/wine epiphany of a classic Chianti and a pasta with some sort of sugo of rabbit, chingale, lamb, tomatoes, etc.

2018 PETROIO OLIVE OIL
EXTRA VIRGIN
$23.99 - 500 ML BOTTLE

Fattoria di Petroio happens to produce a small bit of heavenly olive oil from their 800 or so trees. Not a lot of oil is made here, but when it is available, all of the gourmands on this list should be salivating! The olives for this bottling are a blend of all of the varieties of olives grown at the estate, Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo, and we don’t often offer it out to the entire list.

This southernmost tip of Chianti Classico tends to produce oils that take on an intense and flavorful quality, and this one definitely exhibits those traits, and then some! Nice buttery texture that reveals ripe, heady fruit with an abundance of flavor, and true to Tuscan form, plenty of spice. For us at The Cellar Door, we just love dunking bread in it, but it will also work drizzled over fresh zucchini or perhaps with an American version of Bistecca Fiorentina.
