Zorzal is located at 4500 feet in the sub region of the Uco Valley called Gualtallary just outside of Tupungato. Being at this elevation, Zorzal is the highest winery in all of Mendoza. The high portion of chalk in the soil combined with the elevation gives this killer Malbec an insane amount of energy. Aged 12-18 months in 2-3 year old French barrels, this wine never departs from its origins.
Handsome with an abundance of raspberry, pekoe, chocolate, fig and red earth aromas that keep coming on as the wine unfolds in the glass. In the mouth, it has voluptuousness buffered by cool, zesty tones along with a vertical backbone and a very vinous, broad and seductive finish that soars. Drink this very real Malbec over the next 8-10 years.

A blending grape in Bordeaux, Malbec is the main attraction of Cahors, the famed growing region in the Dordogne and better known as "the black wine of France". Clos De Gamot is one of the region's major players. The Jouffreau family works mostly at the higher end of the spectrum and their wines reveal less about the grape and more about the soil, which is what the best producers of this region accomplish.
The beauty of the Dordogne is expressed deeply and this 100% Malbec is packed with plenty of penetrating power. Deep opaque formidable juice, wild scents of red and blue berries, pronounced limestone-mineral, sandalwood, exotic spice and dried mushrooms pour from the glass and into the mouth where it is full and generous with an ever-so-slight nod to modernity. Even though there is a toe in this century, this is Cahors and the rich land here permeates the aromas and flavors and are a virtual throwback to another era. The finish is long, lasting, dry and palate staining. A whole lotta wine for 24 bucks! Drink this wine now and over the next 10-12 years with just about anything that Is bad for you. Duck-leg, rillettes, paté de champagne, steak with a slab of foie gras on top or blue cheese.

Often times Bryan has been known to cringe at the thought of Washington Malbec because, quite honestly, most of it is plum juice spiked with Everclear and woodchips. Novelty Hill has been committed to making Malbec for quite some time, and the results continue to build upon past successes and the 2013 is quite delicious.
Aromas of red cherry and black cherry mesh well with scents of mocha and nutmeg. The texture here is mouth coating and forward with minimal presence of tannin. Classic Washington dusty aspects come through as well as hints of dried herbs. The finish is packed with fruit and spice. Drink this now through 2022.

Young Jean-Francois Merieau is a Loire Valley rock star located south of Amboise and Blois who after wandering the world and spending time in S. Africa, returned home and has taken what he learned abroad and combined it with the traditions of his area. Focusing on single vineyards, one of the gems is this stunning red wine from 50-100 year old Cot (Malbec) vines.
Lower alcohol than in the New World, the nose is scintillating with fragrant raspberry, licorice, subtle celeriac, pepper and spice-box. Old vine intensity is present on the nose and in the mouth, and it is all done without the invasion of new oak. Chewy red fruits and more dry than their new world brethren, its texture is high-toned with plenty of backbone and length. This is a food wine and a very individual one that is rather tasty with duck, smooth pate, hearty stews and even carnitas. If you want an even more esoteric experience, take some bottles and put them down for 5 years - it will be even more sublime!
