2012 BODEGAS RODA
RIOJA 'SELA'
$23.99 BTL./$287.88 CASE

Bodegas Roda is a small estate that started in the late 80s and one where prestige and accolades arrived early on. Despite its youth as a winery, the vines used for these wines have an average age of over 50 years. Roda owns twelve separate parcels of land, which vary in exposure, elevation, and soil and meticulous farming, impeccable winemaking and major attention to detail is what makes this awesome Bodega not only thrive but have allowed it to become one of Spain’s finest and most sought after. After a bit of an absence in the market, we are thrilled to be able to offer and taste these wines once again.

Sela is Roda’s newest offering and is done from vines aging 15-30 years and is a blend of 96% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha. The epitome of smoothness and very expressive of its origins , this wine offers up extroverted fragrances of cassis, violet, allspice, black licorice and a hint of mineral. Captivating, majestic, mouth-filling, very smooth and gaining complexity as it unfolds in the glass. Stretches out on the palate and carries over to a generous, drawn-out, silky finish with slight peppery tones. Better than many other producers’ Reserva wines, drink this terrific Rioja over the next 7-9 years with roasted pork or lamb.

2013 UPPER FIVE VINEYARD TEMPRANILLO ROGUE VALLEY
$19.99 BTL./$239.88 CASE

In Southern Oregon, winemaking, varietals and life in general is all over the map. This is a large area where some grapes that you may never expect to thrive actually do so very well. Located outside of Talent, Upper Five Vineyard has been certified organic since 2005 and have Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Grenache.

A modern Rioja-influenced wine; only 260 cases were produced. Very savory with a combination of red berry, fine herbs, undertone of plum and intermittent vanilla bean with earthy tones. Mouth filling with plenty of structure, the wine never leaves its framework to become heavy. Nicely layered with plenty of density, this is impressive stuff and will unfold even more over the next 5-7 years.

2013 QUINTA DE LA QUIETUD TORO
'CORRAL DE CAMPANAS'
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

Wine has been made in the central Spanish Toro region of the Castilla y Leon for eons, but interestingly, the region was only granted D.O. status in 1987. Up until the early 90s, the biggest problem with Toro’s wines is that they have been incredibly alcoholic in nature. These days, this area is living up to its potential with great young producers as well as well-known Spanish producers from famous regions like Alejandro Fernandez of Pesquera who have bought land and are making fabulous reds that while being full throttle now maintain nice poise and detail.

Ribera Del Duero: masculine. Rioja: feminine. Toro: drag queen. Full aromatic nose that offers spiced plum, roasted meat, vanilla, sandalwood, all of which set an interesting flavor frame for the overflowing tones of blueberry and blackberry . Warm, full and inviting with a nice balance between spice, rich ripe fruit and a natural firmness. No shortage of vibrancy and underlying finesse that reveals Frenchman Jean-Francois Hebrard’s Rhone roots (this guy consulted with Gerin in Cote-Rotie, Janasse in Chateauneuf and was head winemaker at Vega Sicilia). Have this hearty red over the next 3 years with roasted game meats or grilled steak.

2014 SAINT AMANT TEMPRANILLO
AMADOR COUNTY
$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

Saint-Amant is located in Lodi but their vineyard holdings extend over into Amador County as well. Founded in 1970, the estate initially set out with the Zinfandel grape and planting Portuguese varietals in the 1980s. In the 90s, Tempranillo (known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal) was planted and the results have been impressive and some of the most unique in the Golden State.

Full aromas of blackberry and ripe cherry with sumptuous layers of milk chocolate, mint and cassis woven into the palate, this wine has striking minerality and very refined tannic structure that merge into a long, elegant finish. This voluptuous and dense cuvee’s stunning quality is pure, decadent, and best savored slowly. Served with seared lamb chops stacked high on the platter.
