Friday Sips

FRIDAY SIPS
Chateau Viranel St-Chinian with Special Guest Arnaud Bergasse
Today, Friday Oct. 14 from 3:00 - 6:30
It’s raining sideways and we will all probably need canoes or jet skis to get home, however, we highly urge you to paddle over to The Cellar Door to get yourselves some Southern French Spirituality!
In 7 years of Sips, this is the first time we have ever had a guest from the Languedoc, let alone from one of the region’s most excellent properties.
Come join us today to taste four delicious, soulful, wines and meet Chateau Viranel proprietor Arnaud Bergasse who will be in the house to discuss his family's flavorful selections.

2012 CHATEAU VIRANEL ST-CHINIAN
TRADITION ROUGE
$13.99 BTL./$167.88 CASE

The workhorse of this fine estate, the blend is 40% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre & 10% Carignan and is all about the limestone/sandstone soils of the region. A dry red that is very mighty and fearless for its pricepoint, it possesses way more regal traits than a 14-dollar wine should.

Complex and very Mediterranean, scents of violet, wild spice, tea-leaf and white pepper lead off while waiting in the hole are underlying scents of black licorice and smoky earth. The clean-up hitter is its dry, succulent texture. Graceful spicy-cherry commence on the smooth attack while mint, pekoe and wild spice shine on the energetic and illuminating finish. If you just want to be transported to Languedoc or Provence in your mind, then try some of this wine. So loveable now and over the next 2-3 years, pair it with an array of cuisine like grilled pork chops, smoked sausages, tomato-based dishes, soft-ripened cheese and more. This is Southern French Soul Wine at its finest and would have James Brown jumping up from the grave singing "Rapp Payback! Hey! Come on, now! Hit me! [insert a James scream here]"

2012 CHATEAU VIRANEL ST-CHINIAN
'V DE VIRANEL' ROUGE
$19.99 BTL./$119.94 - SIX PACK

60% Syrah and 40% Grenache from 45-year old vines planted in sandstone which drives this hearty red blend and we're all the better for it.

Impeccable appeal throughout along with a merde-load of detail of origin brings together richness, concentration and power with alluring lavender, thyme, anise and African spice components that could not be mistaken as being from anywhere but Southern France. The pure, energetic and concentrated texture show darkness from Syrah which interacts exquisitely with the high tones and pepper power of the Grenache. The big brother of the tradition, this wine will make any roasted/grilled meat dish sing and make you do cartwheels. Drink over the next 5-7 years. Lastly, Andrew Jeffords, English wine author and of Decanter Magazine rated this wine as one of the Grands Crus of St-Chinian…quite an accolade indeed!

2015 CHATEAU VIRANEL ST-CHINIAN
TRADITION BLANC
$13.99 BTL./$167.88 CASE

60% Grenache Blanc, 20% Vermentino, 15% Roussanne & 5% Bourboulenc grown in limestone and sandy soils, this white maneuvers its way between explosiveness, richness, finesse and minerality.

Aromatically it is undoubtedly Mediterranean in its profile with scents of peach and apricot that play off lime and especially the stony, minerally character, which is the basis of this wine’s terroir. This sets up the palate for a lively and zesty experience of vividness, polish and grace, but not without intensity. Drink it with fish tacos, shrimp or spicy vegetarian dishes.

TRADITION ROSE
$15.99 BTL./$155.88 CASE

40% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and a gourmand Rose made from 30-60 year old vines grown in limestone soil with the Syrah and Grenache done via saignee method and the Cinsault being directly pressed.

A pink wine that made for all seasons, this alluring beauty has plenty of ravenous raspberry, pronounced licorice and marked by wind-swept Mediterranean herbs. A little on the smoky side, it is detailed with roasted earth and a large undertow of hospitable southern French fruit. Absolutely fabulous with seafood or hors d’oeuvres like a plate of charcuterie and selection of goat cheeses.
