2013 FABRE MONTMAYOU
CABERNET FRANC RESERVA
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

Fabre Montmayou is from Argentina and owned by a man from Bordeaux so it makes sense that there would be excellent Cabernet Franc emerging from their Mendoza vineyards.

A resounding Argentine take on the varietal, this wine rocks cassis, tea-smoke, raspberry, clove and cinnamon scents that follow into a texture that is mellow, smooth and very poised. Excellent depth, body and length belie its modest price point. Drink this delicious, superbly priced Reserve Cab Franc over the next 3-4 years with grilled burgers, grilled pork or grilled eggplant for those who don't partake in carnivorous delights.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON BARREL SELECTION
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

Along with having prominent holdings in Mendoza, Fabre Montmayou has staked claim in the already being realized potential that is cool climate Patagonia. With its various microclimates, this southernmost region of Argentina is one of the world's unique wine areas because here Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Pinot Noir are all cultivated and done very well and now are forging their own identities in the wine world.

One of the most impressive, 15 dollar wines from Argentina that we have tasted recently is this inviting, deceptively complex and forward, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Intensely colored with violet and cassis aromas that carry over into a texture that is medium-bodied, exuberant and chock full of flavor and depth. Enjoy this wine at just about any moment with burgers, sausages or smoked meats.

MALBEC RESERVA
$14.99 BTL./$179.88 CASE

The ever so cluttered world of Malbec from Argentina runs the entire gamut of both price ranges and styles. Henri Joyaux Fabre is from Bordeaux and having arrived to Argentina in the 90s, has become one of the country’s most exciting producers.

The biggest reason we love these wines is the sense of balance to the wines. Certainly full flavored as expected but they exhibit fruit and detail all while never drowned in a bunch of oak. Coming from three Mendoza sub-regions (Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza), this buxom offering displays scents of blackcurrant, blueberry, coffee and underlying mineral along with a well-woven shroud of smoke, cinnamon and coffee. Layered, mouth filling and velvety in the mouth, there is plenty of lift and freshness to go along with the bold core of fruit. The finish soothes with licorice-laden energy. Extremely accessible now, it can easily age for 3-5 years, too.

2012 FABRE MONTMAYOU
MALBEC GRAN RESERVA
$21.99 BTL./$263.88 CASE

Up the mountain (maybe not the Andes) we climb, ascending into the lofty wines of this fabulous estate. Gran Reserva here does not mean required time in barrel; instead, it refers to the terroir and quality of the fruit. All of the fruit for this wine comes from 60-year-old vines in the esteemed Luyan de Cuyo sub region of Mendoza.
Heady, full and aromatic nose of bold, dark plum-pepper, allspice, violet and hot rock. One smell reveals that it is from old vines at a high elevation. Sexy, saturated, chewy and polished. Dense, vinous and a real mouthful of red wine. Through all of this, it maintains elevation that calls you back for another glass and another and another, etc., etc. The finish is penetrating and dense revealing strawberry-licorice aspects and lingering around for a long time. Tasty indeed. Drink over the next 6-7 years.
